UK: prosecutors say criminal can keep half of the proceeds

Following the conviction of a money launderer, the Crown has made a surprising application.

When we reported on the case of the GBP400 in the car of taxi company owner ( (previous story) it was highly likely that a conviction would follow.

And it has with a jury finding Peter Smith guilty of laundering money which was the proceeds of drugs trafficking.

So far so good. He's been remanded in custory pending reports prior to sentencing - and also whilst an inquiry is conducted into his gains.

But a preliminary application by the prosecution at the conclusion of the trial has raised eyebrows.

The prosecution claims that Smith has gained approximately GBP1.8 million - but it asks for only GBP900,000 to be subject to asset seizure.
